Dentzel Carousel Restoration Project Photos Part 2

This is an update of the carousel restoration for the SF Zoo on July 1, 2000.

The process is going great. You can see photos (below) of the striping process. The Stripping and Refinishing Center in Los Angeles has stripped hundreds of horses and are considered experts in the removal of park paint from horses. They have been involved with the EPA and other government agencies to monitor the VOC’S that are emitted during the process. From their long history of carousel work two great things have been discovered. How to strip a carousel animal without destroying the integrity of the glue laminations and the removal of residual chemicals for paint adhesion. We are very fortunate to have this shop in Los Angeles, the toughest city in the country when it comes to this type of work. This shop is run by two brothers, Rand and Zennon. You will see them in the photos. This hands on care for every piece they work on is evident in every piece.

The carousel is still open and running. Please go and enjoy it in its current state for the summer. In September the frame will be dismantled and start to be restored. The carousel will be closed for this work. In the spring of 2001 the whole frame will restored. The animal restorations will still be an on going process with the final animals being finished in the spring of 2002. The inner trim will be completed the spring of 2001 with the outside trim in the winter of 2001.

The next update will have photos of the restoration of the animals as it happens. The rabbits that have been off the carousel for years will be some of the first to be finished. The restoration is a long and slow process. Brass Ring will try to keep you up to date with photos of the work as it happens. If you have any questions please contact us. We are working for you, the public. Let us know what questions you have.
