1. ELK CITY, OKLAHOMA CAROUSEL: MEMORIAL DAY OPENING PLANNED
Have you been following the progress of Elk City's wooden, western-themed carousel? Things are going very well with all aspects of the construction of this soon to be operating carousel.
The last newsletter highlighted the completion of the newly cut, flame-hardened gears and a number of newly painted horses, including the spectacular Indian Pony lead horse.á
Recently added to the website are photos of the construction of the custom designed carousel building (you'll need QuickTime installed in order to view the slide show) and another batch of completed western-themed wooden horses. All the horses on this machine have been carved by famed carver Ed Roth. The quality and attention to detail is evident in every horse. Even non-experts will notice the difference, a difference that will bring warmer smiles to all riders for years to come.

2. SAN FRANCISCO ZOO CAROUSEL: RIGHT ON TRACK
Things are going very well on the complete, back-to-original-paint restoration of the zoo's gorgeous, 1921 Dentzel menagerie carousel. Have you had a chance to view some of the completed horses? Ten out of a total of 52 animals have already been completely restored! A total of 20 completed animals will be in place for the re-opening in May.
The completed animals are truly works of art...as fine as any fine art sculpture. This carousel ranks as one of the finest ever made, and after its restoration is complete, will no doubt please and inspire another century of happy visitors.
Center Pole and Gears: as part of the full restoration, we are having a new center pole HUB constructed and new gears cut. Upon inspection, it was found that the center pole hub had been worn beyond repair, the result of years of unbalanced operation. Currently under construction, the new center pole HUB should last well into the next century.
The gears that we are having cut will be among the longest lasting ever put on a carousel. They are being precision cut out of solid, flame-hardened, alloyed steel, as opposed to being cast. Naturally, most visitors will be astonished by the beauty of the exterior of the carousel...the important thing to know is that on this machine the beauty is more than just skin deep.
The carousel will reopen Memorial Day May 26, 2001 with 20 completed animals. The restoration of the remaining 32 animals is an ongoing process that will take another year to complete. Brass Ring Entertainment and the San Francisco Zoo have made a commitment to keep the carousel open to the public as much as possible during the restoration process.

3. ALBANY, NEW YORK'S HISTORIC DARE CAROUSEL: MOVING RIGHT ALONG
Step by step, things are moving right along on this truly historic carousel's restoration. Now that several of the horses have been completely restored, it is hard to believe what they looked like not long ago. The New York State Museum has put the first three completed horses on display titled "Horses With A History".
Early last month, we were visited by two New York Museum staff members, John Shear and Mark Schaming. They had a chance to see our shop and the general operation of our restoration business, and they were able to see first hand the collaboration necessary do the best job possible. We rely on the talents of a large number of independent crafts folk in order to get the job done. Their work speaks for itself.

4. NEW AT CAROUSEL.COM: FREE CAROUSEL ePOSTCARDS
By popular demand, we have created a Free Carousel ePostCard page here at CAROUSEL.COM. This is a nifty page that allows you to pick a carousel photo and pick a band organ tune and send it to a friend. I can't think of a better way to put a smile on someone's face.
Currently, you'll find a selection of photos of the in progress Elk City, OK carousel. In the near future, we plan on including photos from other projects that we are working on, so fresh images should be showing up one-after-another. Be sure to visit often.

5. "WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CAROUSEL ANIMAL?"
The Official Carousel Survey is finally here! We tried to start it over a year ago, but our survey software didn't hold up.
For our first survey, we ask you: "What is your favorite carousel animal?". Answers: horse, pig, frog, rabbit, deer, lion, camel, tiger, goat, giraffe, and finally other. You decide. After you vote, you will be presented with an up-to-date graph showing the current count and number of total votes. Have fun!
